Dork Diaries 1: Tales from a Not-So-Fabulous Life by Rachel Renée Russell (Hardcover)

Nikki Maxwell starts eighth grade at a new private school and keeps a diary about it. There is the fight with her mom over a phone, two new friends named Chloe and Zoey, a crush named Brandon, a little sister who is a menace, and a mean girl named MacKenzie who becomes her rival in the school art competition.

This is the book that started the series in 2009, in the updated hardcover edition from Simon & Schuster. Rachel Renée Russell wrote and illustrated it in diary form, with cartoons throughout. The series has sold more than 55 million copies.

Ages 9 to 13. The obvious starting point if a reader is new to Nikki.
